Mississauga - Cooksville HistoryOriginally known as Harrisville, the area around the Hurontario Street and Dundas Street intersection had been named for Daniel Harris built a sawmill there.When Harris returned to the United States, Jacob Cook bought the land and the village was renamed Cooksville.Prior to its incorporation in 1974, Mississauga was known as Toronto Township. In the 1870s Cooksville was chosen as the site of the Toronto Township Hall and remained the centre of the township until The Mississauga Civic Centre opened in 1987.  Jacob Cook's House, Mississauga Cooksville was a farm service centre Toronto Township's rural landscape and agrarian remained relatively unaltered until after World War II, when the automobile and paved roads encouraged residents from Toronto to move to cheaper premises in the "suburbs." Toronto Township dramatically transformed into a conglomeration of residential and industrial subdivisions, high-rise apartments and office complexes, shopping centres, Toronto Township became the City of Mississauga and was incorporated as a city in 1974.
